Result. Have you read Henry Harris's books? I thoroughly approve of his approach to collecting - build your collection to reflect the structure of the real thing, everything from high command down to the supply train. A few wargamers i know would benefit from adopting that approach...8-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1385210602449395922.post-50568191571319966162008-04-11T04:28:00.000-07:002008-04-11T04:28:00.000-07:00...John - excellent post - I'd never realised that......John - excellent post - I'd never realised that Delderfield also wrote "real" history, even though I have read (and enjoyed) a large quantity of his fiction output, including Seven Men of Gascony" and "Too few for Drums" ... Young's ECW books directly led to writing rules and playing many enjoyable ECW wargames* with friends at home and at wargame shows. I think I must have another ECW game this year.

I did not sell off my ECW units fifteen yearss ago when I retired from the hobby. Indeed I reorganized them at 1:10 and with deeper formations so regiments of foot are less linear and more blocky as they should be. Thus, the compromises of a young man are corrected by a hopefully wiser older one.
---
Last weekend I bought T.A. Heathcote's The Indian Army, part of the Hippocrene series from the 1970s. Funny I did not buy it when new back then but now with the small revival of colonial wargaming, it will come in handy with rules contemplations and many other things leading to playing games.
-----------
Thanks for the memory John,
Bill
----------
* participation gamesGalliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12258909398832285314noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1385210602449395922.post-21065585606206789742008-04-09T02:54:00.000-07:002008-04-09T02:54:00.000-07:00Three excellent choices. I recall being entranced by Imperial Sunset on a wet family holiday in the Highlands in the early 70s.

Rogers was an outstanding writer; I've also been guilty of tending lazily to discard these older works, in the flawed belief that they will have been superseded by later research, but he stands the test of time.

Steve GillAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
